The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) plans to introduce a new nationwide self-exclusion registry during the 2022-23 fiscal year.

This registry will encompass authorized online and telephone sports wagering services, enabling individuals to voluntarily exclude themselves for any duration, ranging from three months to an indefinite period. This initiative is designated as a paramount compliance objective for the ACMA in the current year. Other key priorities encompass combating identity theft, telephone scams, and the dissemination of false information on social media platforms.

“The registry will offer a means for individuals seeking to modify their gambling habits and will serve as an adjunct to existing consumer safeguards,” stated ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin. “Upon opting for self-exclusion, it will be unlawful for any licensed betting provider to establish an account for you, accept your wagers, or promote gambling services to you. The ACMA will enforce these regulations.”

Earlier this month, the ACMA urged internet service providers to restrict access to thepokies.net, as the website was not adhering to the country’s 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.
