Residents of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, who engage in slot machine play during the late hours are more prone to experiencing gambling issues, according to a recent investigation.

The research, titled “The Influence of Late-Night Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) Use on EGM Player Conduct,” examined individuals who participated in slot machine play after dark.

The report determined that a substantial segment of individuals who engage in slot machine play during the late hours exhibit gambling problems. Furthermore, the report indicated that two-thirds of individuals who participate between 2 am and 8 am experience “severe” adverse outcomes.

The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) of NSW stated that it will utilize the study to guide future decisions regarding regulations and rules pertaining to late-night gaming.

“As part of our legal responsibility to minimize harm associated with gaming, ILGA will leverage the findings of this study to inform future decisions,” stated ILGA Chair Caroline Lamb.

“ILGA has implemented a variety of measures to minimize gambling harm and address concerns regarding requests for increased late-night gaming machine availability.

“We have established Guideline 16 to assist gaming venues in reducing late-night gambling harm and promoting responsible gambling practices.”

Its crucial that all gaming applications possess a comprehensive gaming management strategy. This strategy will play a pivotal role in mitigating the potential hazards associated with gambling.

The ILGA has established guidelines specifically for gaming apps, aiming to minimize the risks of gambling-related harm.

This research endeavor was funded by the New South Wales Government’s Responsible Gambling Fund. The New South Wales Liquor and Gaming Authority provided valuable assistance in conducting the research, which was executed by Roy Morgan Research.
